When people depend on us, uncertainty becomes more than a private experience. Our fear enters the environment around them. Children sense it. Employees observe it. Families feel it even when nobody names it directly.
I have learned that protecting others does not mean pretending that everything is fine. False reassurance eventually weakens trust. But there is a difference between sharing the truth and transferring the entire emotional weight of that truth to someone who cannot carry it.
Leadership sometimes means holding uncertainty long enough to give it a calmer and more understandable form. We can be honest about the difficulty while remaining thoughtful about how our fear enters the room.
People do not always need us to know exactly what will happen. Sometimes they need to know that uncertainty has not taken away our ability to remain present.
People do not need us to hide reality, but they should not have to carry all the fear with which we first received it.
