Difficult circumstances can gradually change the way we see ourselves. A financial problem begins to feel like personal failure. A rejected application becomes evidence that we are not capable. A difficult season starts to appear as a permanent description of who we are.
I have learned to separate the condition from the person living through it. Circumstances can reduce our options without reducing our worth. They can expose weaknesses without becoming the complete measure of our character.
This does not mean denying responsibility or avoiding an honest assessment of our choices. It means refusing to allow one period of life to become the final definition of the person passing through it.
Technology may increasingly classify us through past data and visible outcomes. Human dignity asks us to remember that a person is always more than the condition a system can currently observe.
A difficult condition may describe where we are, but it should not be allowed to decide entirely who we are.
