Short Short Reflection 21

Develop the Person, Not Only the Role

Reflection 21 · On People

1-min read · Looking Inward

Organisations often train people to perform their current responsibilities. But roles change. Technology changes. Business models change. The capability required tomorrow may not exist in today's job description.

I have learned that developing people means helping them see beyond the task directly in front of them.

Can they understand why the work matters? Can they make decisions when the procedure no longer fits? Can they learn something unfamiliar without losing confidence?

The best development does more than prepare someone for promotion. It increases their ability to contribute wherever the organisation — and their own life — takes them next.

A role belongs to the organisation. Capability remains with the person.

Do not develop people only for the position they hold. Develop them for the responsibility they may one day be ready to carry.
