Make Change Safe Enough to Try

Reflection 86 · On Experimentation

1-min read · Looking Inward

Uncertainty can make people resist a change before they have experienced it. They imagine the permanent consequences of a decision that has not yet been tested.

AI transformation intensifies this, because employees may connect a small experiment with much larger questions about their role, their value, and their future. The pilot is never only a pilot.

I have learned that people become more willing to explore when the first step feels reversible. A limited trial, a clear review point, and permission to stop or revise will usually produce more learning than a large promise of certainty.

The purpose is not to remove risk. It is to make risk understandable enough that people can take part without feeling one mistake will define them — because confidence usually grows after action, not before it.

People do not always need certainty before they begin; sometimes they need a first step small enough to survive being wrong.
