Digital systems increasingly remember what human beings once allowed to fade. An old opinion, an awkward moment or an earlier version of ourselves can remain searchable long after we have changed.
Memory has value. It helps us learn, remain accountable and preserve what matters. But I have learned that healthy relationships also depend on the ability to update our understanding of one another.
People should not be judged forever by the least complete version of who they once were. Growth requires memory, but it also requires mercy.
As intelligent systems become better at preserving our past, human judgement may need to become better at recognising transformation.
To know someone fully is not only to remember what they have done. It is also to notice who they are trying to become.
A complete record of the past should not become a permanent limit on the future.
