Growth is usually treated as evidence that a business is moving forward. But more customers, more products, more subsidiaries, and more activity do not always create a stronger organisation. Sometimes they create complexity faster than capability.
I have learned to distinguish growth from expansion. Expansion makes the organisation larger. Growth makes it more valuable, capable, and resilient.
The opportunity in front of us is not always more important than the system behind us. Before adding the next initiative, leaders should understand whether the existing organisation can support it without weakening what already works.
Not every opportunity deserves pursuit.

A business does not become stronger simply because it becomes bigger. Growth must deepen capability, not only increase activity.
