Personal Networks, Fair Opportunity and the Promise of AI

Relationships play a powerful role in Thai society. Personal networks can help people find employment, business partners, investment and access to information. Trust moves through families, schools, professional groups and long-standing connections.

Networks are not inherently unfair. They reduce uncertainty and allow people to rely on the experience of someone they know. Many opportunities begin because one person is willing to introduce or recommend another.

The problem arises when access depends too heavily on belonging to the right circle. Capable people may remain invisible because they lack connections. Decisions may favour familiarity over merit. New entrants may struggle to compete with established relationships.

Artificial intelligence appears to offer a solution. AI systems can review larger numbers of candidates, identify skills and compare performance without relying on personal introductions.

But algorithms do not automatically create fairness. If historical data reflects an environment where opportunities were distributed through existing networks, AI may learn to reproduce the same patterns. A model may favour candidates from particular universities, locations or career paths because those groups were successful in the past. Bias becomes less visible because it appears as a technical result.

Thailand should therefore avoid assuming that the choice is between human favouritism and objective AI. Both people and systems require governance.

Technology can help widen opportunity when it is designed to search beyond familiar networks, recognise transferable skills and allow people to demonstrate capability in new ways. Human relationships can continue adding context and trust — but they should not become the only entrance to opportunity.
