Sanuk: Can Work Still Feel Human When AI Makes Everything Efficient?

How can AI improve productivity without removing enjoyment, creativity and human participation from work?

This reflection extends the Thai Culture category — additional cultural ideas that shape how Thai people may work in an AI-enabled society.

The Thai idea of sanuk is often translated simply as "fun," but its meaning is broader. Sanuk describes the human energy that comes from enjoyment, participation and a sense that an activity is worth engaging in. Difficult work can still contain sanuk when people feel connected, challenged and alive while doing it.

Artificial intelligence promises to remove repetitive tasks, shorten processes and increase productivity. This should give people more time for meaningful and creative work. But efficiency does not automatically create meaningful work.

An organisation may use AI to reduce paperwork and still create an environment that feels empty. Employees may complete more tasks while having less opportunity to interact, experiment or experience pride in what they produce.

When every process is optimised, work may lose the informal moments through which people build relationships. A short conversation before a meeting, shared humour during a difficult project or the collective satisfaction of solving a problem together may appear inefficient — but these experiences often create commitment.

Sanuk reminds us that human motivation cannot be measured only by output. People remain engaged when they feel that their contribution matters and that the workplace contains energy, relationships and opportunities to grow.

AI should therefore be designed to remove work that drains human potential, not remove all human involvement. Thai organisations have an opportunity to interpret sanuk as a serious management principle. The best intelligent workplace may not be the one where people do the least. It may be the one where people spend more of their time doing work that feels worth doing.

Efficiency can complete a task, but sanuk gives people a reason to care about completing it well.
