This article is part of a series revisiting ideas from my doctoral research, Characteristics of Culture in the Context of Thai Society and Virtual Communities, through the lens of today's AI-enabled society.
The virtual communities I studied were primarily created by people. Technology provided the space, but human members created the conversations, relationships, norms, conflicts and shared identity. Community leaders moderated behaviour, while participants collectively determined what was accepted, rewarded or rejected.
The emerging AI environment is fundamentally different. Algorithms are no longer passive infrastructure. They influence what we see, who we hear from, which opinions receive attention and how information is presented. Generative AI goes even further: it can participate directly in communication.
We are moving from human communities supported by technology towards human societies increasingly mediated by intelligent systems. This distinction is profound.
In a traditional community, culture emerges from repeated interaction among people. In an AI-mediated society, culture may also be affected by the objectives, training data, design decisions and commercial incentives embedded within technological systems. An algorithm does not need to issue an instruction to influence behaviour. It can alter society simply by determining what becomes visible.
When a platform repeatedly rewards outrage, people learn to communicate through outrage. When a system prioritises popularity over credibility, attention becomes confused with truth. When AI provides immediate, personalised agreement, people may gradually become less comfortable with disagreement, patience and negotiation.
Recent research has begun to examine whether habits developed during interactions with highly agreeable conversational AI could carry into human relationships. This possibility has been described as a form of "norm leakage": communication habits learned from consequence-free interaction with machines may influence how people later communicate with other people.
This is not merely a question of technology ethics. It is a question of cultural formation. Every technological system encourages certain behaviours. Some encourage speed; others encourage reflection. Some strengthen competition; others support collaboration. Some make authority visible; others hide it behind automated recommendations.
The culture of an AI-mediated society will therefore not emerge accidentally. It will be shaped by choices:
Who defines the system's objectives? What kinds of engagement does it reward? Does it expose users to different perspectives, or continuously reinforce their existing beliefs? Does it help people exercise judgement, or gradually replace the need to judge? Does it strengthen human relationships, or become a more convenient substitute for them?
These questions are becoming increasingly urgent as AI adoption accelerates. Stanford's 2026 AI Index reports that generative AI reached approximately 53% global population adoption within three years, although adoption varies substantially among countries.
At this scale, AI should no longer be viewed only as software. It is becoming part of our social architecture.
Businesses should therefore assess AI systems not only through productivity, cost savings or technical performance. They should also evaluate the behaviours and organisational culture those systems may create. A system that makes employees faster but less accountable may not represent progress. A system that provides answers but weakens learning may improve short-term efficiency while reducing long-term capability. A platform that increases engagement while damaging trust may create activity without creating value.
The real leadership challenge is not simply adopting AI. It is deciding what kind of human environment AI should help us build.
Every algorithm contains an idea about how people should behave — even when that idea is never written down.
